A pair of the best floor-standing loudspeakers can, in some cases, cost as much as several thousand euros. This said, whether you need to buy your first floor-standing speakers or a new set to replace the previous ones, the main parameter to take into account is the capacity of the amplifier that will drive them and the width of the room where you will be placing them. Some facts about floorstanding speakers

Floor-standing speakers are usually shaped like boxes or cones with a more or less elongated shape, with a variable height that can reach up to one and a half metres. Their ability to diffuse sound is diversified: some speakers are designed to emphasize high frequencies, while others to enhance medium or low frequencies, and they can be used alone or in pairs. Hi Fi floorstanding loudspeakers, in addition to diffusing music, are also functional furnishing accessories that contribute to the aesthetics of the room in which they are placed. It is therefore also essential to choose them according to your environment, especially taking into account their overall size, as they are more bulky than other types of loudspeakers.

Passive speakers vs active speakers

There is a clear difference between active and passive loudspeakers: active loudspeakers are independent instruments, so to speak, almost automatic, which have numerous customization options and they are equipped with an internal amplifier. On the other hand, passive loudspeakers necessarily need an external amplifier, they are usually larger in size and can only be used correctly after manually setting some acoustic parameters.

Active loudspeakers are very popular on the market and several sound professionals choose them for work or personal projects. Active loudspeakers have a special potentiometer on the external surface, whose task is to regulate the power of the amplifier and the loudspeakers themselves and a direct connection to the power supply. Furthermore, some models allow you to adjust the so-called cross-over filters, thus changing the timbre of the sound coming out from the speakers.

Passive speakers, on the other hand, have totally different characteristics compared to active speakers, and also differ in terms of operation. First of all, passive loudspeakers must absolutely rely on an external amplifier; if you decide to go for passive loudspeakers, consider the option to buy a decent and efficient amplifier as well.

The difference between the two types of speakers is also in the sound equalization. An active loudspeaker, having many customization and modification options available, can also equalize itself almost autonomously. The sound produced by passive speakers, on the other hand, must be equalized manually, paying attention to the various nuances and trying not to create distortions or other annoying effects. If you decide to buy passive speakers, you should take your time to configure all sound options manually. Only after that you have taken all the necessary actions can you really proceed with the actual use of the speakers.

But ultimately, how do passive speakers sound? Well, from a sound point of view, you will find passive speakers simply delicious. If you can fine-tune all the settings, the sound coming out of passive speakers will be of high quality, almost always. However, always remember that active speakers are more likely to reproduce better quality than passive speakers.
